Although given all the material luxury the Hollywood Hills can bestow, Christina grows up in emotional poverty. After being denied a child through an adoption agency, she acquires a baby through other means and names her Christina. Mommie Dearest sees Crawford eyeing middle age, twice divorced, badly in need of a hit movie and thoroughly broody. Regardless of your tolerance for high camp and massive hair, you've got to admit it's memorable. Some call it a melodramatic, over-cooked turkey while others hail it as a cult classic. "You've got everything you wanted in life."įaye Dunaway gives it some welly as the unforgettable queen of 1930s and 1940s Hollywood royalty Joan Crawford in this exercise in posthumous myth-making and myth-breaking. Shutting herself off from the world, she is in a war against herself. Luca is struggling to survive, crushing social anxiety as a result of PTSD. I don’t like clowns.” Dirty Letters by Vi Keeland & Penelope Ward I have a fear of crowds and confined places.” She set the kettle down on the stove and lit the burner. No one had ever asked me such a direct question about my mental health. I can take Penelope’s punches while Vi holds my hand. I love the stories-but I’m wrung out and exhausted by loving characters like Sevin, Jake, and Channing, which is why I love when she and Vi Keeland write together. But I don’t find it emotionally comfortable to get though. She’s excellent at delicately, but honestly, depicting the mental health and mental illness challenges her characters must face. I won’t lie, though I always feel emotionally exhausted on the last page because this woman writes trauma earnestly. I loved both of these novels and most of the other Ward books I have read since. I think the first Penelope Ward book I read was Stepbrother Dearest-No, it was Jake Undone. 7/6/2023 0 Comments The ash princess seriesI'll be honest, from the cover's gritty crown (also, does anyone notice it looks a lot like the Red Queen cover?), I had been hoping for a tough and rugged princess. He's definitely someone I would want to smack, a tyrant who's fall will bring me much delight. He enslaved all of Theo's people, forced her to bow and scrape to him, continuously shamed her, alienated her, and so forth. The Kaiser's actions were definitely antagonist-worthy. This book's set up had key elements I love in fantasy: tyrants, protagonists forced to do unspeakable horrors, suppressed powers, and a revolution in the wings. And power isn't always won on the battlefield.įor ten years, the Ash Princess has seen her land pillaged and her people enslaved. But she does have a weapon: her mind is sharper than any sword. With blood on her hands and all hope of reclaiming her throne lost, she realizes that surviving is no longer enough. Then, one night, the Kaiser forces her to do the unthinkable. She is powerless, surviving in her new world only by burying the girl she was deep inside. She's endured the relentless abuse and ridicule of the Kaiser and his court. Theo was crowned Ash Princess-a title of shame to bear in her new life as a prisoner.įor ten years Theo has been a captive in her own palace. On that day, the Kaiser took Theodosia's family, her land, and her name. Theodosia was six when her country was invaded and her mother, the Fire Queen, was murdered before her eyes. Indeed, at this time Spain was at the height of its power militarily, economically, culturally and religiously.Īcross the continent, Germany existed not as a single nation state but as hundreds of autonomous polities with their own rulers, commonly referred to as a princes, though that was rarely their formal title. By the time he took the throne as King Charles I of Spain in 1516, the European Age of Discovery was well underway, bringing massive wealth and power to the Iberian Peninsula from Asian trade and precious metals from the Americas. Charles had been born in 1500, only eight years after Columbus' discovery of the New World. 25, 1555, the Hapsburg emperor of the Holy Roman Empire and the north German princes of the Schmalkaldic League signed the Peace of Augsburg, which after a bloody war allowed for a new level of religious freedom among Christians in the German states.īy the early 16th century, the most powerful man in Europe, arguably the world at the time, was Charles of the House of Hapsburg. 7/5/2023 0 Comments Naked Body by R. Orion MartinThe book presents a nuanced portrait of the equally young National Guardsmen, who were under extreme pressure and suffered from a severe lack of training, while deftly examining the polarized political context, anti-communist paranoia, and rampant government surveillance surrounding the anti-war movement during the Nixon administration. In this deeply researched work, Backderf, best known for his Eisner-nominated 2012 graphic nonfiction work My Friend Dahmer, reconstructs the lives and last days of the student activists and bystanders killed when the National Guard fired on unarmed antiwar protesters on the campus of Kent State University. Released in September during the 50th anniversary year of the 1970 tragedy, Kent State: Four Dead in Ohio (Abrams ComicArts) by veteran comics journalist Derf Backderf garnered the majority of votes in PW’s annual Graphic Novel Critic’s Poll, receiving eight votes from a panel of 14 comics critics. |
